Central Station Metro is an underground Tyne and Wear Metro station in Newcastle city centre. It sits on Neville Street in Grainger Town, NE1, directly beneath Newcastle railway station, the busiest station in Tyne & Wear and in North East England. It is the third-busiest station on the Metro network, after Monument and Haymarket. In 2024/25 it handled about 4.4 million passenger journeys, roughly 84,000 a week.
Both the Green and Yellow lines stop here. They link the city centre with Newcastle International Airport, Gateshead, Sunderland, South Shields and the North Tyneside coast. The station is served by up to ten trains per hour on weekdays and Saturdays. It has entrances from inside the National Rail station and from Neville Street and Grainger Street. Its single upper-level concourse therefore catches commuters, students, shoppers, day-trippers and intercity rail passengers changing between national rail and Metro.
The station is staffed and step-free. A £6 million refurbishment was completed in 2017, and in December 2025 it became the first Metro station to trial free WiFi. Nearby are the Centre for Life, the Stephenson Quarter, Grainger Town’s Georgian streets, Eldon Square, the Quayside and St James’ Park... Read more
